In April 2024, Sandbox Space became the first coworking space in Malaysia to run WiFi 7, deployed in partnership with ASUS, and today both branches run it on a 2+1 Gbps failover setup. This is the story of why a mid-sized independent coworking space ended up ahead of the towers on internet, and what it actually changes on a working day.
Internet is the one utility a coworking space cannot fumble. Every member's worst moment is the same moment: a client call, mid-pitch, and the connection hiccups. We decided the fix was worth being early for.
What is WiFi 7, in plain language?
WiFi 7 is the current generation of wireless networking, and its practical gifts are three. Speed: multi-gigabit throughput, so large files move in seconds rather than progress bars. Stability: it uses wider channels and can hold connections across multiple bands at once, which means fewer drops in crowded rooms. Capacity: it is built for floors full of devices, laptops, phones, monitors and cameras all talking at the same time without elbowing each other. On a shared floor, that third gift is the one you feel daily.
Why does the failover setup matter more than the speed?
The number people quote is speed; the number that saves your meeting is redundancy. Both branches run a 2+1 Gbps failover setup: if the primary line has a problem, traffic moves to the standby line and your call carries on. Most offices and homes run one line and one prayer. This is also why we are careful with the marketing numbers: the headline the brochure could shout is less important than the fact that the connection survives a line failure at 2pm on a Tuesday.
Why did ASUS partner with a coworking space?
Because a live coworking floor is the perfect stress test. Dozens of companies, hundreds of devices, video calls all day, training rooms filling and emptying: if hardware performs here, it performs. ASUS brought the WiFi 7 gear and launched the deployment with an event in our Sunway hall, and the partnership has carried through hardware generations since. For us, the point was never the launch day; it was that members stopped thinking about the internet at all.
What does it change for your actual work?
Video calls hold steady on busy afternoons, including from the phone booths and meeting rooms, which run on the same network.
